Oulton Park – 18th August 2012 – Mike Turner / John Owen
Oulton is a place that we both like so we were really looking forward to the weekend as both of us were going to get a race. The car looked great with its new front splitter and fitting new tyres transformed the car. Qualifying went well with Mike sixth for the first race and grid position for the second race being determined by the first race result. Mike made a good start and held on through the first corner and down through cascades before settling into a good pace. Craig Mitchell had to fight hard to get back the place he’d lost off the grid and Mike then got into a great tussle with fellow MCR driver Paul Martin. They each had parts of the circuit on which they had the edge and Paul eventually came out on top despite Mike’s best efforts including use of the grass in trying to find a way past.
A quick spanner check and the car was ready for race two with John starting from seventh. A reasonable start but some ground lost in the first corner saw him behind both Nick Bacon and Peter Williams. Peter and John were both quicker than the Gunn and eventually John found a way past Peter and was able to attack Nick finding a way through on the way to Island bend. Peter got past too shortly after and continued to pressure John until the last lap of the race with the two MCRs separated by under two seconds at the finish in fifth and sixth respectively. It was easily John’s best race since joining Sports 2000 and we had much to be happy with as we packed up and headed back down the M6.
