Brands Hatch – 2013 – Round 6 – Patrick Sherrington

Qualifying was wet with the rain increasing throughout the session. I struggled to find a good balance and didn’t want to risk the car in the atrocious conditions so settled for fourth behind Justin Everitt, Craig Mitchell and Rob Oldershaw
The race was going to be dry but there were wisps of drizzle and a very strong wind. Mike Turner gave me a little tip before going out with car set up which turned out to be spot on – Thanks Mike.
Red lights out and got one of the best starts of my life the car leapt forward and I went from 4th to first in about 20 meters to lead into Paddock Hill bend. Fantastic! I tiptoed round Paddock on relatively cold tyres and nailed the throttle down the hill. A quick check in the mirror saw the familiar sight of the blue and yellow Gunn of Rob Oldershaw so it was definitely going to be race on.
I got my head down and went for maximum attack for lap one and managed to pull a 0.4 second gap on the first lap which allowed me to concentrate on getting a good line into Paddock Hill and carry maximum speed.
The car was performing beautifully and I managed to pull away from the rest of the field at a relentless pace getting the gap up to 7 seconds at one point. However it wasn’t to be all plain sailing and some issues with getting past slower traffic broke my concentration and trying too hard into Paddock Hill saw me miss the breaking point and run a “wall of death” round the very outside of the corner – I have never been so wide at Paddock and not gone into the gravel!
There was now only about 5 mins to go and as I rounded Paddock again I was met with the sight of the sister MCR of Anders Fredericson parked right on the racing line at the bottom of the hill. It was going to be a red flag or a safety car for sure and I must admit I was relived to see the red fly and the race finish to take championship win number 3 of 2013.
A fantastic finish to 2013 with another win and fastest lap.
The car was great with more progress this year and but for 6mins at Oulton would have been a championship winner this year
Thank you to Alan & Tina and all at ADI Group, Clive, Cindy, Ken & Anthony at MCR, Dad, Scott “the data guy” and of course Paula and the kids for all your support this year.
