BRSCC OSS Silverstone rounds 1 2 3 – 27th 28th May 2017

By Driver Patrick Sherrington

For 2017 we thought it was time for a new challenge so have moved up to the seriously fast Open Sportscar Series. We have entered into Class A which is for cars with over 2000 cc engines. Even though we only have a 1600 we have turbocharged the engine to over 300bhp which means running in the top A class

Qualifying

Silverstone was always going to be difficult as due to issues with suppliers the new car was not ready meaning we have to wheel out the trusty Sports 2000 spec car from last year!

It rained for the first couple of laps

meaning that the track was slippery for the rest of the session. This worked well for me as the more powerful cars couldn’t use the extra horsepower and I qualified 8th out of 34 cars and 3rd in Class A.

Race 1

Another new feature for Excool OSS is that there is a rolling start so all 30 plus cars thunder towards the start line waiting for the lights to go green!

This didn’t suit my lack of power on the now dry track and as the lights went to green a couple of cars slipped by into Copse corner. I found that my car was competitive on both the brakes and the corning areas but Silverstone has a couple of really long straight areas and each time the more powerful cars would pull away or catch up. This meant I slipped back a couple of places and had to start defending my position.

Mid way through the race I was tipped into a spin at Copse corner at 120mph and after a brief spell going backwards at over 100 mph I managed to spin the car back round the right way and continue the race although another few places were lost.

The race of the race was relatively uneventful and I finished in the middle of the pack but 3rd place in Class A

Race 2 & 3

Races 2 and 3 were more of the same but thankfully I managed to stay out of trouble. Happily I picked up another couple of 3rd places in Class A so good for the championship overall.

The new cars should be ready for Rockingham so can’t wait!
